In regard to the article, Why More Blacks Are Choosing Plastic Surgery (August 2004), I think there is nothing wrong with African-Americans (or anyone else) having plastic surgery if it will help you to feel more confident about your body. I believe that what you decide to do with your body is your business; just know that our bodies are beautiful just as God made them. Remember, beauty begins within your soul!
In addition, plastic surgeons have sought to develop better techniques for the treatment and repair of skin damage resulting from burns, and improved techniques for the repair of congenital deformities of the hand and craniofacial reconstruction for repair of cleft lip and palate , one of the most common plastic surgeries for babies, children, and adolescents
A relatively small percentage of plastic surgery procedures are performed on patients under 18 for cosmetic purposes. These procedures include otoplasty (correcting prominent ears) and rhinoplasty (reshaping the nose); and breast augmentation and breast reduction. Data from the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons on cosmetic procedures performed on patients under age 18 are shown in the accompanying table.
OPERATION SMILE INTERNATIONAL
In 1982, plastic surgeon William Magee and his social worker wife, Kathleen, founded the nonprofit organization Operation Smile. As of 1996, the organizations surgeons had performed surgery on 18,000 children in 15 countries. Surgeries performed included cleft lip and palate correction, and burn scar correction.
| Procedure | Total number | Percentage of patients (all ages) |
|---|---|---|
| Breast augmentation | 1,172 | 1% |
| Breast reduction in males | 1,319 | 22% |
| Ear surgery | 2,470 | 34% |
| Nose reshaping | 4,313 | 9% |

Im responding to a question one of your readers had regarding the 300 workout. In the Talkback section of the December 2007 FLEX, Gaspar Cortez asked, Is that all you do for the workout, or do you do more? [See The Show Big Report, August 2007 FLEX for the original workout.] On my first attempt, I used the 135-pound bar and finished in roughly 15 minutes. I was on the verge of passing out. Hands down, it was the toughest workout Ive ever done. I can now complete the workout in 11 minutes 50 seconds with 135 pounds; 15 minutes with 185; and 20-22 minutes with 225. I do it three times a week. Since I started using this workout, Ive gone from a soft 180 to a ripped 190. I guarantee Mr. Cortez will be shaking after the 50 floor-wipers–if he makes it that far. By the way, my 20-year-old cell partner failed to even complete the 300 on his first attempt. Done correctly, this is the most intense full-body workout ever.

I originally planned to use a Tamiya Mountaineer chassis for this project, but as I began to lay out my design, it became clear that the Mountaineer was not a viable option. However, I was soon inspired by a full-size truck that I saw on the cover of a magazine. It had a very basic-but durable-looking-chassis design. I studied the pictures closely and headed to the hobby shop to pick up some brass stock. This was the perfect way to begin the project; the brass stock was readily available and easy to work with, and I wasnt limited by the need to retrofit an existing chassis. I could build in any features I wanted! Using a torch and a soldering iron, I soldered the chassis together, winging it all the way. Since the chassis was symmetrical, all I had to do was complete one side; then I was able to use it as a template for the other side. After the main chassis had been completed, started to work on the hood tilt mechanism. For greater realism, I wanted the hood to tilt via a mini air piston instead of a servo. To help determine where the piston should be installed, I laid out the chassis and hood on a CAD (computer-aided design) system. This allowed me to experiment with the pistons position to see where it would work best, without a frustrating trial-and-error process.

Overview The human impulse to put something pleasant beneath our feet must be almost as old as the one to erect shelter over our heads, and carpets have been lying around for at least 6,000 years. They also function as art, insulation, sound absorber, and a source of metaphors (rugs as hairpieces, rolling out the red carpet, being called on the carpet, carpetbagger, carpet bombing–just from English).
Fragrance-free Host EXTRA dry extraction carpet cleaner is ideal for extremely soiled carpets and heavily soiled traffic areas. Packaged in 12-pound recyclable buckets, it can be loaded into the Host applicator or applied by hand. The cleaner can be used to restore all types of carpet.

Freight transport saw the volume of road freight transport drop in the third quarter of 2006 after three years of its robust growth. The volume of rail freight transport picked up by 4.2% in Q3, year on year, while the volume of road freight transport fell by 4.3%. International transport performed by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia decreased by just 0.8%, whereas transport within the country recorded a stronger drop of 16.1%. This was the first year-on-year quarterly fall of road freight transport since Q2 of 2003. Q3 of 2006 also witnessed a 10.2% fall in the volume of maritime freight transport. This activity registered the second consecutive year-on-year quarterly decrease, whereas in 2005 it still enjoyed robust growth (41.7%), driven by the boom in the industry. Harbour freight transport surged by 27.6% in Q3 and also recorded a high nine-month year-on-year increase (24.6%). Over the last five years, road freight transport surged by more than 50%, which was almost entirely due to the increase in international transport. In Q3 of 2006 over Q3 of 2001, road freight transport picked up by 56.5% or 1,003 million tonne kilometres (tkm). The shipment of goods out of or into Slovenia rose by 49.1% or 534 million tkm, whereas transport abroad and cabotage (the shipment of goods within another country) shot up 4.3-fold, i.e. by 450 million tkm. Meanwhile, national road freight transport increased by a modest 3.5%, or 19 million tkm. Within the EU, Slovenia is one of the few countries that perform the highest number of per capita road shipments (measured in tkm). The favourable transit position and the countrys smallness (a high share of international trade) underpin Slovenias high proportion of international transport, whose growth has been additionally boosted by the process of Slovenias integration in the EU. The last administrative barriers to carrying out freight transport abroad were removed as Slovenia became a full EU member, which led to the boom in activity seen in recent years.
TRANSPORTATIONThe decisions a business owner must make regarding transportation of products are closely related to a number of other distribution issues. For example, the accessibility of suitable means of transportation factors into decisions regarding where best to locate a business or facility. The means of transportation chosen will also affect decisions regarding the form of packing used for products and the size or frequency of shipments made. Although transportation costs may be reduced by sending larger shipments less frequently, it is also necessary to consider the costs of holding extra inventory. The interrelationship of these decisions means that successful planning and scheduling can help business owners to save on transportation costs. There are five basic means of transporting products utilized by manufacturers and distributors: air, motor carrier, train, marine, or pipeline. Many distribution networks consist of a combination of these means of transportation. For example, oil may be pumped through a pipeline to a waiting ship for transport to a refinery, and from there transferred to trucks that transport gasoline to retailers or heating oil to consumers. All of these transportation choices contain advantages and drawbacks.
Looking at freight transport, there was a significant increase in maritime and railway transport, while the volume of road transport remained roughly at the level from last years second quarter. After the volume of maritime transport fell by a fifth in the first quarter, it rose by 14.5% in the second quarter of 2007, year on year. The volume of transport has become more volatile in recent years, but the volume of goods carried has not contracted significantly relative to the global conjuncture witnessed in the industry in 2005. Maritime transport is one of the minor transport modes in Slovenia. Railway freight transport grew by 14.9% in the first quarter and continued to grow strongly in the second quarter. Harbour transport recorded a modest increase, while road freight transport did not increase in year-on-year terms in the second quarter, partly because of the very high volume of road transport seen in the second quarter of 2006. Data also show that the expansion in this mode of transport, boosted by the abolition of restrictions upon Slovenias accession to the EU, has moderated somewhat this year Slovenia is near the top among EU countries according to the volume of road freight transport per capita. The assessment refers to the volume of freight transport expressed in tonne kilometres, undertaken by freight vehicles registered in a given country. It measures carriage by domestic freight vehicles in the country of registration and abroad, and not the volume of transport within the territory of a given country. In 2006 by far the most per capita road shipments were performed by carriers registered in Luxembourg (18,766 tkm; see graph). Slovenian carriers (with three times lower freight transport per capita) were ranked second and performed 58.9% more transport than the average carrier in the EU. The high intensity of road freight transport in Slovenia is the result of the surging growth rates of road transport, particularly in 2004 and 2005 (27.9% and 22.5%). From the second quarter of 2004 to the second quarter of 2007, the volume of shipments carried by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia increased by 53.8%. Domestic transport rose by 23.9%, while international transport climbed by as much as 63.8%. Within international transport, the largest (3.2-fold) increase was recorded in cross-trade transport and cabotage (transport performed in another country). The well-developed shipping industry in Slovenia is attributable to Slovenias favourable position at the crossing of European corridors V and X. Transport on these corridors is increasing, and Slovenian carriers are exploiting new business opportunities. With Slovenias entry into the EU, a number of administrative barriers for carriage within the EU were removed for Slovenian carriers (especially the procurement of a limited number of licences). Slovenia also negotiated the possibility to perform cabotage in the EU-15 countries, which the Eastern European countries that joined the EU together with Slovenia will only be allowed to do after the end of a five-year period.

Historically, the augmented breast has presented problems for both mammography and ultrasound imaging because of the superimposition of lesions and glandular tissue. (1) Radiographically dense breasts also can present a diagnostic imaging challenge for the early detection of breast carcinoma because of the following factors (2): * Fibroglandular tissue obscures cancer because both have similar attenuation properties. * Dense breasts produce more scatter radiation, decreasing image contrast.

The stage last week for three Democratic state Assembly hopefuls was a College of San Mateo classroom with three blue plastic chairs arranged tightly beneath the whiteboard. The audience was about 30 students, some bleary-eyed for the 10 a.m. Thursday class but filling every seat for Political Science 310: “California State and Local Government.” And the stump speeches were generally predictable in one of the early debates among San Mateo County Supervisor Jerry Hill, Millbrae Mayor Gina Papan and community college district Trustee Richard Holober.
The Seventh Annual I Have A Dream National Youth Assembly recently attracted 1,400 youth from across the country to study the teachings of civil rights martyr Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. Motivational speakers, community leaders and celebrities challenged the youthful participants to become drum majors for peace and justice. Actor Charles Dutton, in a special address, encouraged participants to set high standards and charged them not to let their past dictate their future.
With the help of the IPC Electronics Assembly Scholarship Fund, these three students dreams are moving a little closer to reality. Clemons, Ballesteros and Perez are recipients of $500 scholarships from this years fund.

With discounters emphasizing fast-moving, good-margin automotive chemicals–having all but abandoned the hard parts business to auto parts chains–nine out of the 10 top brands in automotives were chemicals, and the other one, Fram filters (the only hard part in the group) was related to motor oil. AC Delco, batteries and tune-up equipment dropped off the retailers top 10 chart after a four-year run. And only 4% of consumers named AC Delco as a favorite brand. And the introduction of private label car batteries, such as Everstart at WalMart, Car Driver at Target and Penske (soon to be at Kmart) further dampens the vaunted AC Delco name in batteries. Retailer responses about increases in national brands vs. private labels indicate a shift in favor of private label, which was just fine with about one-half of consumers polled.

ADVERTISING MEDIAAUDIORadio stations feature many different programming emphases. These range from music-oriented formats such as country, adult contemporary, classic rock, and alternative rock to news-or talk-oriented formats. Since these different formats attract different demographic segments of the total audience, business owners can take appreciable measures to reach their target audience simply by buying time on appropriate stations. Another major advantage of radio advertising is that it is inexpensive to place and to produce, allowing small business owners to place advertisements on more than one station in a given market. In addition, radio advertising content can be changed quickly to meet changes in the market or to reflect new business objectives. Finally, radio reaches large numbers of commuters, income-generating people who often pay more attention to radio advertising than to other advertising media, especially if they are driving alone. The costs associated with purchasing radio advertising time reflect this emphasis on reaching the commuter audience. The four time slots, or dayparts, offered for advertisers by most radio stations are the morning drive, daytime, afternoon drive, and evening. The two most expensivebut also most effective advertising slotsare the morning and afternoon drive times.

WASHINGTON — Construction of new homes and apartments plunged by 17.6 percent in March, the biggest decline in 14 years and another possible indication that rising interest rates are beginning to take a toll on the economy. Meanwhile, wholesale inflation shot up 0.7 percent as energy prices soared. The Commerce Department reported Tuesday that builders started construction on new homes and apartments at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.84 million units in March, down from 2.23 million units in February. “This is a bit of a shocker,” said David Seiders, chief economist for the National Association of Home Builders. “But I dont think this represents a fundamental downshift in the housing market. There were special factors behind it.”

The 2007 Concrete Elegance series continued to cover a range of issues and projects. The first lecture examined developments in sustainable concrete architecture. In particular, it focused on the reduction of both embodied and operational CO2, how to create carbon-neutral concrete and the design of single-skin self-finished external concrete walls. Lecture speakers included: Toby Lewis of Fielden Clegg Bradley Architects, who discussed the National Trust Heelis building in Swindon and the Persistence Works in Sheffield; Patrick Filipaj of Zurich-based Banz Choffat Filipaj Architekten, who examined the single-skin concrete construction of Peter Gartmanns Char House; and Ian Prichett of Lime Technology, who presented the use of hempcrete for Adnams Distribution Centre designed by architect Aukett Fitzroy Robinson.
What made the difference was aloof frontwoman Victoria Bergsman, who last year dramatically left the band hours before an appearance on the Jonathan Ross show. This in the wake of a traumatic trip to the States, where she collapsed on a New York stage and the band had their equipment nicked in Boston. The Concretes have recruited a new singer from within their own ranks- drummer Lisa Millberg. Taking just the bands nervy start, Millberg seems to be a mistake. The gangly blondes awful melodic aim makes you fear for the lights. You only snatch at rare moments where she finds a delicate sigh that matches the tenderness of certain songs. Uncomfortable at the front of the stage, Millberg continually seeks reassurance from colleagues, especially guitarist Maria Eriksson, with whom she shares some wayward call and responses. Yet Millberg connects with the crowd, not only through vulnerability, but also with a playful banter unknown in previous shows. She points out that this is the 11th time the outfit have performed in London and adds that “the venues keep getting smaller”. Such is The Concretes plight that the vocalist introduces “Oh Boy” with an urge to vote for their forthcoming single on digital station BBC6. River Bend Inc., a new Spokane company, has bought a longtime North Side restaurant and lounge called The Bend Restaurant and plans to open a five-table gaming operation there this month if it receives approval from the Washington state Gambling Commission. Lynass says he expects the Gambling Commission to approve by the middle of this month River Bends request to operate three poker and two blackjack tables. The companys planned gaming operation, which is to be called The River Bend Casino, would occupy the second floor of the two-story, 4,500-square-foot building where The Bend Restaurant currently is located. The space on the second floor had been used sparingly for banquets and meetings. River Bend will operate a restaurant and lounge in most of the 3,000 square feet of space on the buildings main floor, continuing to use the name The Bend Restaurant. Lynass says River Bend hopes to expand the gaming operation later to 12 tables, but would need state approval to do so.

Despite an industry upheaval and two gravely ill sons, this health-care entrepreneur discovered the prescription for perseverance. Sadly, looming business woes were the least of the Langdons worries that year. In the summer of 1996, at age three, their son Spencer–twin brother of Tyler–was diagnosed with leukemia, warranting three years of chemotherapy and approximately $1,000 worth of medication each month. Faced with circumstances that would obliterate the future goals of most, the Langdons didnt fold, but instead expanded ATPs services to override the Medicare massacre. Making ATP a onestop shop by adding outpatient rehab to its services was the ultimate goal, but first the Langdons had to move the company out of their Carrboro, North Carolina, home (situated in a bedroom, no less) and into a Hillsborough, North Carolina, office complex. To Ted, outpatient was ATPs salvation. I really started seeing the effects [of the Balanced Budget Act] in 1997, says Ted, 33. Medicare-based agencies were laying off staff, and the first people to go were with contract companies. If they didnt go Out of business or merge with other corporations, agencies drastically reduced their pay rates to contract companies, lowering the therapists wages. Some just didnt pay at all–like House Calls, a statewide home-health agency in North Carolina whose owner was nabbed for allegedly double-billing his way to Medicare/Medicaid fraud in 1997. I tried everything I could to retrieve [the $14,000 House Calls owed], but they were sued by everyone, says Ted. They had everything frozen, and I wa s so far down on the lawsuit list that, basically, I never got paid.

Employment Job growth is beginning to keep pace with the regions expanding working-age population.
Total Employment Rate An important aspect of economic performance is how the resources are utilised, human capital being societys main resource. Consequently, the employment rate and its development are crucial both for economic growth and social cohesion. The Lisbon European Council stated that more and better jobs should be created and the overall target was to increase the employment rate to 70% by 2010. An intermediate goal for the employment rate was to reach 67% by January 2005. In addition, the re-launching of the Lisbon Strategy by the European Council in 2005, following the mid-term review of the Strategy, has put even more importance and focus on growth and employment.
The five industries reporting growth in employment during September are: Instruments Photographic Equipment; Wood Wood Products; Furniture; Printing Publishing; and Transportation Equipment.

Mary Skiffington has joined the fine homes residential division of Cassidy Associates Real Estate, Inc. Peter Middleton, real estate sales agent for RE/MAX of La Jolla, has been ranked among the top 100 RE/MAX sales agents in California for sales volume from January to June 2002. Gina Drucker and Karen Pado have joined RE/MAX of Rancho Bernardo as a real estate sales team. International Real Estate has added Eric B. Shwisberg as vice president and general counsel.
Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.

Increasing concerns over homeland security issues have put ever-higher levels of pressure on state governments that are often too beleaguered and too cash-strapped to have any hope of keeping up with security suggestions and initiatives from the feds. “New Hampshire is unique compared to a lot of states. There is a lot of security and high-tech expertise, particularly in Nashua, Manchester and Portsmouth,” Steinberg notes. “In addition, were a small state where people and companies are closely connected. Its the small boat versus the ocean liner theory. Were small enough to move quickly and take on a wide range of security issues, from power systems to healthcare records, throughout the state. We could become one of the examples that other, larger states look to when they are doing their own security initiatives.” Steinberg knew it would take an organized group effort to address the security needs of the state, as well as the help and backing of a major organization, as technology security and cybersecurity werent his only concerns. An effort to improve statewide security and meet homeland security needs will require coordination of security guard providers and perimeter fence manufacturers, too, among many others, he stresses.
Security is being free from danger. The term can be used with reference to crime, accidents of all kinds, etc. Security is a vast topic including security of countries against terrorist attack, security of computers against crackers, home security against burglars and other intruders, financial security against economic collapse and many other related situations.
SECURITY: Phishing–the practice of using fake emails from banks and ISPs to trick Netizens into giving out financial details like bank account numbers, login IDs and passwords–is rapidly replacing spare and even Net worms as one of the biggest security worries for e-commerce firms in the Asia Pacific. In fact, according to research firm IDC, phishing has become one of the fastest-growing non-violent crimes among banks in the region in recent months. The success of e-commerce businesses depends on consumers confidence in purchasing online, Yu says. It only takes one major security breach to destroy the trust and relationship that has taken years to build between customers and vendors.

Where should I shop for my car insurance? The growing number of comparison websites are a great tool for finding competitive insurance quotes, but its worth shopping around a few to find the best deal. No one site has every insurer, and some companies, such as Direct Line and Norwich Union, refuse to be quoted on comparison sites. Three of the best for car insurance are confused.com, gocompare.com and tescocompare.com. Third party insurance will only cover the other persons costs if you have a crash. If you have an accident and its your fault - or you dont get the other drivers details - then you wont get anything back. Comprehensive insurance will pay out in all situations, but costs more. Youre legally required to have car insurance, but if youve got an old car, it may not be worth paying for anything more than third party. If your cars newer and more expensive, the extra cost is probably well worth it.
Electricity bills depend on how much electricity is used each month. Soon auto insurance premiums, too, may be metered, based partly on how much the car is driven. That is the goal of Progressive Auto Insurance, which is testing a system that uses global positioning satellite technology to track when, where and how much its auto insurance customers drive — and then charges them accordingly. A pilot version of the program is being tested in Texas. The system is the brainchild of Robert J. McMillan, a business development leader at Progressive, a major auto insurance company based in Mayfield Village, Ohio.

The color of an automobile influences how much it costs to insure it. Comprehensive coverage protects drivers in all situations because, after all, it is comprehensive. Car insurance companies can charge whatever they want. Have you ever thought one or more of these statements to be true? You are not alone. A survey conducted by DriveSM Insurance, Mayfield Village, Ohio, from The Progressive Group of Auto Insurance Companies, finds many drivers accept common car insurance myths as true. Here is a sampling: Myth: Car insurance rates are not regulated and insurance companies can charge whatever they want. Fact: Each state has regulators who review the information companies collect as well as the rates they charge; insurers cannot deviate from those rates. Myth: Comprehensive coverage protects drivers in all situations. Fact: Comprehensive coverage is one type of protection available. It only pays for damage caused by an event other than a collision, such as fire, theft, or vandalism; it also covers weather-related (e.g., hail, flood) damage; and damage caused if a vehicle collides with an animal. Moreover, it provides a rental car if a vehicle is stolen.
One in 10 respondents said they had made changes to the look of their vehicle including fitting a body kit or spoiler, non-standard alloy wheels or tinted windows. Around 7 per cent had made changes that affect the way the car drives, including fitting a sports exhaust, lowering the suspension, fitting a microchipped engine- management system or re-boring an engine. If not disclosed, modifications could invalidate a car insurance policy. Although the majority of insurers would not pay out on damage caused to the changed parts of the car in the event of a claim, they would pay for any other damage or injury caused.

FREMONT, Calif. — A new wristwatch-based heart monitor allows people on the go to keep close tabs on their heart rates without interrupting their routines. All the user needs to do is place two fingers on the sensors that are comfortably located on the watchs sporty case, and in a matter of seconds the EKG results are given to the user.
1 The Heart Rate Monitor Shop has an exceptionally helpful website, with advice and information if youre new to training. A popular seller there is the F11, which has features such as a training programme to motivate you, calorie burning displayed as you burn, and a setting to save your three favourite exercise settings.
LAS VEGAS — In multiple gestations, dont rely solely on the mothers perception of how the fetuses are positioned when monitorig fetal heart rates, Patricia M. Witcher, a registered nurse clinician, advised at a conference on fetal monitoring sponsored by Symposia Medicus. An ideal way to identify each fetus before heart rate monitoring would be to use ultrasound, but thats not realistic because most people who initiate monitoring dont do ultrasound, said Ms. Witcher, a nurse at North-side Hospital in Atlanta who specializes in labor and delivery and high-risk obstetrics. The best way to identify each fetus is by doing simultaneous monitoring and looking for divergence of fetal heart rate tracings. Thats really the only way we have of ensuring that we have a heart rate for each fetus, she said.

Its payback time for business technology providers - 2003 produced a bumper crop of exciting new products and initiatives. Management identifies the technologies that will deliver the greatest productivity gains in 2004 and beyond. The hype has largely evaporated and technology is now focusing on pure productivity outcomes, helping organisations work smarter, so that ultimately we can all work less. It is not just about new products either. Its also about delivery. IBM New Zealand managing director Nick Lambert views the increasing alignment of both technology and service offerings from vendors as a significant industry development.
Firms are facing financial difficulties because they are too slow to grasp new technology, according to Graham Whitehead, principal consultant and futurologist at BT, who spoke at the ITService Management Forum conference last month in Brighton. Whitehead pointed to encyclopedia publisher Britannia as a great example of a firm using new technology and learning to adapt. The company has published a L39 DVD of its complete encyclopedia collection in addition to the hard copy volumes. “Firms are going out of business so quickly, Whitehead added. They have about 10 months to get it right once they start having difficulties.” Geoff McMullen, president of the British Computer Society, agreed that change was becoming increasingly rapid and was multi-dimensional. Half of what we know today will be out of date within three years, he said. But he cautioned firms not to get carried away by technology. You can get the new technology, but your infrastructure must be developed slowly and carefully. People must be trained and the vision communicated within the organisation, or the technology means little.”

By designing materials and structures at the molecular level, engineers believe they can create products featuring powerful chemical and mechanical properties hitherto unknown to the technical community. The current market for fuel cells is $218 million and will increase to $2.4 billion by 2004, reaching $7 billion by 2009. Most fuel cells today are found in distributed generation applications in the power market, providing dedicated electrical energy to hospitals, restaurants, schools and other facilities. In the next few years, fuel cells are expected to show up in tens of thousands of automobiles, and by 2010, automotive fuel cells are estimated to have nearly 4 percent of the consumer market - 608,000 vehicles.
Despite the rise in internet use and e-business projects, many businesses have no idea what an extranet is. But then, theres no reason why they should. Extranet development is just a subset of the technologies and systems put into place when a business decides to widen its e-business capacity. Vikki Bland explains. As e-business implementation in New Zealand is commonly outsourced, its not uncommon for a business to end up owning and using extranet technologies without knowing exactly what they are. “The whole e-business thing has been over promised and under delivered by software vendors; companies like ours tend to be the victims of that.”

Twenty-five years ago, an entire desktop computers processing power handled less data than todays Palm Pilot(TM). Computers required highly skilled operators. The idea that practically every American would have a computer on his or her desk someday was utterly unbelievable, let alone the fact that one day computers would be carried in your briefcase, or even in your shirt pocket. The Internet, e-mail, computer– aided design, and countless other everyday tools would not exist without the computer. Mammoth supercomputers that originated in the mid-1970s with Cray Researchs Cray-1, also have shrunk in size and grown in capacity. IBM, regarded often as todays supercomputer leader, has produced systems with computational capability of more than 12.3 teraflops. Current supercomputers often consist of clusters of PCs wired into a network. At the forefront of supercomputing are SGI and NASA. They teamed up early this year to install a 512-processor system based on SGIs Origin- 3800 system at NASAs Ames Research Center. The supercomputer is being used by NASA to develop spacecraft, and perform computational fluid dynamics, global climate modeling, and computational astrobiology. Today, computers define generations. The PC and the advent of the Internet have revolutionized the world, providing the ability to communicate with virtually anyone, anywhere, who has access to a computer. There are no barriers, no borders.
COMPUTERS AND COMPUTER SYSTEMSFinally, for a digital computer to function automatically, it requires programs, or sets of instructions written in computer-readable code. To be distinguished from the physical or hardware components of a computer, programs are collectively referred to as software.A computer system , therefore, is a computer combined with peripheral equipment and software so that it can perform desired functions. Often the terms computer and computer system are used interchangeably, especially when peripheral devices are built into the same unit as the computer or when a system is sold and installed as a package. The term computer system, however, may also refer to a configuration of hardware and software designed for a specific purpose, such as a manufacturing control system, a library automation system, or an accounting system. Or it may refer to a network of multiple computers linked together so that they can share software, data, and peripheral equipment.

This is one of the few numbers close to matching the band in their pomp.
The Concrete Centres activities and achievements have made significant progress during 2006. The UK has one of the lowest per capita consumptions of cement and concrete in the world. The Concrete Centre has been set up to address this by ensuring that the key decision makers and influencers in the construction industry are made fully aware of the wide range of benefits and attributes that concrete has. The most critical project stages that assist in the formulation of a decision as to whether or not to go with concrete are the feasibility study and detailed design. It is at these stages that the frame material is determined. Therefore, it is essential that the decision makers involved are able to make a fully informed choice in terms of structural design, construction methods, fire performance, environmental and acoustic performance and thermal efficiency. We in the concrete industry need to ensure that best practice information on the most efficient forms of concrete construction is available to design teams. The resources and advice provided by The Concrete Centre prove invaluable at this critical stage of the design process.
